Many homeowners struggle with window treatments, and deciding what works best for each space can feel overwhelming. Different windows call for different solutions, whether that’s a tailored roman shade, soft drapery panels, or a minimal roller shade. Fortunately, a number of boutique custom window suppliers have emerged in recent years, many offering complimentary in-home measuring services that make the process far more approachable.

At Lex & Hudson, we think of window treatments as an essential design layer, one that can transform light, mood, and proportion. Here’s how we approach the three most common types we specify.

Modern dining room designed by Lex & Hudson featuring a sculptural walnut table, pale blue banquette seating, and brass candlesticks. A geometric pendant and abstract artwork complement the soft plaster walls and natural light, blending organic form with refined minimalism.

Drapery on a Track

For spaces that call for a clean, modern profile, a track system is an elegant choice. The hardware is often concealed within the ceiling or behind a valance, allowing the fabric to take center stage. We use tracks for floor-to-ceiling installations, where the continuous fall of fabric creates a soft, elongating effect and provides smooth, effortless movement. This look works beautifully in contemporary or transitional interiors where you want architectural simplicity paired with texture.

Roman Shades

For recessed windows or smaller spaces, roman shades are often the best solution. Their tailored folds provide a clean, polished appearance without overwhelming the architecture. In bedrooms, we pay particular attention to the depth of the window cavity to prevent light leakage. Many of our custom romans include a privacy or blackout liner, ensuring restful sleep while maintaining an elegant, finished look.

Drapery on a Rod

When the goal is to add warmth and layered dimension, drapery on a rod is a timeless favorite. We often specify a double rod system (one for sheer panels and another for heavier drapery) allowing for both light control and visual depth. The right hardware can completely transform the tone of the room, from traditional brass finials to sleek blackened steel. Rod-mounted drapery is ideal in living rooms or family spaces where softness and flexibility matter. It adds structure while framing the view and introducing another layer of texture and color to the design.
