A well-designed bedroom is more than beautiful; it’s functional, calm, and quietly luxurious. And with winter coming, we all feel that irresistible urge to curl up in bed all day. At Lex & Hudson, we believe a great bedroom balances intentional proportions, layered lighting, and materials that feel as good as they look. Whether you're refreshing a primary suite or polishing a guest room, these are the details that make the biggest impact.

Nightstand Height: The Secret to Everyday Comfort

Proportion is the foundation of great bedroom design, and nightstand height is one of the most overlooked details. Your nightstands should sit roughly level with the top of your mattress (within 1–2 inches). This makes it easy to set down a glass of water, reach for your phone, or switch off a lamp without awkward stretching. For standard mattresses, nightstands should be between 24"–28" high. For taller mattresses, 28"–30" and for low, modern platform beds,  20"–23" high.

Sconces vs. Table Lamps

Lighting shapes the mood of your bedroom, especially in winter, when softer, warmer layers feel particularly comforting. Table lamps are a timeless, flexible choice. We love them because they add warmth and sculptural interest and are easy to update seasonally or stylistically. The total height  of the lamp and the nightstand should place the bottom of the lampshade around eye level when you’re seated in bed.

Wall Sconces are polished, architectural, and space-saving. They create that boutique-hotel moment, freeing up nightstand space, offering a focused reading light, and creating overall symmetry and visual rhythm. Sconces should be mounted about 55"–60" from the floor, adjusting for pillow height and whether the sconce is adjustable.

Bedding: Layering for Warmth, Comfort & Style

Winter is the perfect season to rethink your bedding and create a bed you truly want to dive into. Start with quality basics with crisp cotton or linen sheets (300–500 thread count or stonewashed linen), a lightweight quilt or coverlet for everyday use, and a duvet for height and softness. Texture is everything. Incorporate linen for breathability, chunky knits for winter warmth, velvet or bouclé accents for seasonal richness, cotton matelassé for a tailored base layer.

Winter is the season to retreat, restore, and enjoy the spaces that support you most. Thoughtful design is the quiet luxury that makes those moments feel even better.
