Many of our clients are young families, who want homes that feel both stylish and livable. Over the years, we’ve seen firsthand that designing a beautiful space doesn’t have to mean giving up on practicality. With the right materials, smart layouts, and intentional choices, it’s possible to create a home that looks polished, functions for everyday family life, and grows with you as your needs change. Here are some ideas on how to design a family-friendly yet stylish home.

Choose Durable Materials

Performance fabrics like Crypton, Sunbrella, or stain-resistant velvets are our go-to for sofas and chairs. They withstand sticky fingers, crayons, and snack spills without sacrificing style. Natural finishes such as matte oak, stone, and wool rugs hide wear beautifully while still looking elevated. Slipcovers are also a favorite recommendation for young families as they’re washable and swappable.

Prioritize Smart Storage

Every young family we work with shares the same challenge: clutter. We recommend incorporating intentional storage that blends with the design of the home. Ottomans with hidden compartments are a great option for toys. Closed cabinets instead of open shelving offer a sleek and polished look with less mess on display. Natural baskets and bins can add texture while keeping things contained.

Go for Rounded Edges & Soft Finishes

When we’re designing for families with toddlers or young kids, safety is always top of mind. But soft finishes can also feel stylish and intentional. Curved coffee tables or upholstered ottomans eliminate sharp corners and double as extra seating. Matte finishes on wood or stone hide fingerprints better than glossy options. Washable rugs and plush throws bring comfort while standing up to daily wear.
